Q: So Cleopatra has been reserved for the sexy, voluptuous woman, or someone’s conception of gypsies?

PB:Yes. In fact, Cleopatra is a very curiously complex part. From the moment that I started working with Glenda Jackson a long, long time ago, I felt that she could play it. And before we did Marat/Sade, I used to say two things to Glenda when we started working on our first season: “You’re one of the great actresses of the world” and “It is quite clear that one day you’re going to play Cleopatra.”

I don’t say that she’s the only person who can play it. Because there are great actresses who have played it and who can play it. But she is the one to whom I’m closest, because of all our work together, and I thought right away that she should play it, but she was too young at that time. So, this is a project with Glenda begun over fifteen years. I’ve just been waiting quietly for her to be old enough. And now she’s the right age.
